Welcome Back to The Cwtch 🧡

A cozy corner of the internet where AI makes sense — no degree required.

This week: AI companies are making privacy easier to find and easier to control. The practical habit is simple: take ten minutes to set three switches, so your AI chats work the way you want.

🔐 THIS WEEK'S STORY: YOUR AI CHATS, YOUR CALL

People tell AI a lot.

The worry about a rash.
The tricky email to the landlord.
The budget that does not quite add up.

That is not a mistake. Real details are often how you get real help.

But most of us have never looked at where those chats go.

Who can see them?
Do they help train the AI?
Which other apps can it reach?

Good news: this week, the answers got easier to find.

ChatGPT added locked chats. On October 20, OpenAI started rolling out a way to tuck chosen conversations behind a 4-digit PIN. Locked chats are hidden from your regular history, pinned chats and search. On many phones, you can open them with Face ID, Touch ID or your phone's unlock. It is coming gradually to free and paid plans.

ChatGPT's Privacy Center puts the answers in one place. OpenAI started rolling it out in September. It explains memory, ads, temporary chats, connected apps and model training in plain language, then takes you to the right setting. OpenAI says simply opening it does not change your settings.

Gemini gathered its connected apps into one spot. On October 21, Google highlighted a new Customize hub in the Gemini app. Google says, "You choose which apps to connect, and permissions can be audited or disconnected at any time."

In plain English: the privacy switches were always there. Now they are easier to find.

For AI chats, three matter most:

  • Training: whether your chats help improve future AI models

  • Visibility: who could see a chat on your screen or a shared device

  • Connections: which of your other apps the AI can reach

The question is not, "Is it safe to tell AI anything?"

The better question is, "Have I set it up the way I want?"

So the habit is this:

Before you share something personal with AI, set your switches once.

⚡ QUICK WIN: THE THREE-SWITCH PRIVACY CHECK

You need about ten minutes and the AI app you use most.

Switch 1: Training (3 minutes).

Decide whether your chats can help train the company's AI. In ChatGPT and Gemini, this is on by default for personal accounts. Here is where to look:

  • ChatGPT: Settings, then Data controls, then "Improve the model for everyone."

  • Claude: Settings, then Privacy, then "Help improve our AI models."

  • Gemini: Settings & help, then Activity, then turn off Keep Activity.

Turning it off in ChatGPT keeps your chat history.

One small catch: thumbs up and thumbs down count as feedback. In ChatGPT and Gemini, rating a response can share that conversation to help improve the AI, even with the switch off.

Switch 2: Visibility (3 minutes).

Look at your chat list as if someone were standing behind you.

For a one-off question you do not want saved, use a temporary chat. For chats you want to keep but not show, lock them. More on that in this week's pick.

Switch 3: Connections (4 minutes).

Open the list of apps your AI can reach. In ChatGPT, open the Privacy Center, then Data use & access, then Plugins & apps. In Gemini, open the menu and choose Customize.

Disconnect anything you do not use.

Before you share something personal, try this:

❝

I want help with [situation]. Before I give details, tell me what information you actually need and what I can leave out.

Example: you want help writing to a clinic about a billing mix-up. AI needs the dates and the amounts. It does not need your health card number.

Simple rule:

❝

Share what helps. Switch off what you do not need.

🌍 CWTCH WATCH: PRIVACY BECOMES A SELLING POINT

The quiet trend lately: tech companies are competing on where your data goes, not just on how smart their AI is.

  • Perplexity said on October 20 that its Computer assistant can now run entirely on a Mac, even offline. Files reach the cloud only when you approve.

  • Google expanded live speech translation in Google Meet to 63 languages on October 22. Google says you choose whether your speech is translated, and that it does not store voice data or train models on your voice.

  • OPPO announced a Transparency Report in its new phone software on October 13. It shows which AI services were used, when, and what they did.

In plain English: "Where does my information go?" is becoming a question companies want to answer up front.

Watch for these three questions:

  • Where does it run? "On your device" means your information stays on your computer or phone. "In the cloud" means it travels to the company's servers.

  • Can I see what it did? A log or report you can check is a good sign.

  • What does it need? Perplexity's local mode is for paid subscribers with a newer Mac, and it works best with at least 36 GB of memory. Meet translation needs an eligible paid Google plan.

The best AI helper will not just be smart. It will be clear about what it keeps.

💡 THIS WEEK'S PICK: CHATGPT LOCKED CHATS

Locked chats let you keep a conversation but hide it behind a PIN. Handy on a shared family computer, or before you share your screen on a video call.

How to lock a chat:

  • Lock it: open the chat's ••• menu, choose Lock chat, then confirm.

  • Set a PIN: the first time, ChatGPT asks you to create a 4-digit PIN.

  • Find it later: go to Projects, then Locked chats.

  • On your phone: on an iPhone, you can turn on Face ID or Touch ID under Settings, then Security and login, then Account PIN. On Android, choose device unlock when asked.

A few honest notes:

  • Remember your PIN. If you forget it, resetting the PIN permanently deletes your locked chats. Changing a PIN you remember is fine. Keep it somewhere safe.

  • It hides chats. It does not change your training setting, so Switch 1 still matters.

  • Some chats cannot be locked, like temporary chats and group chats.

It is rolling out gradually to free and paid plans, on the web, the phone apps and the new desktop app. No Lock chat yet? Check back soon.

More of a Gemini or Claude person? Try Switch 1 and Switch 3 today. The exact tool matters less than the habit.

ONE LAST THING

Privacy is not about hiding everything.

It is about choosing.

Choose what helps it learn.
Choose what stays out of sight.
Choose what it can reach.

Ten minutes, once, and AI works on your terms.

Hit reply: which switch surprised you most? 🧡
